Sesame milk (in Spanish, «leche de ajonjolí») is a plant-based drink made with sesame seeds and water. It is an option for those who do not have dairy, it has a delicious nutty taste and you can make it at home in under half an hour. Here is what sesame provides and the recipe step by step.

    What sesame is

Sesame seeds (ajonjolí) provide calcium, iron, zinc, copper, phosphorus, magnesium, unsaturated fats and protein. That is why they are used in tahini, in bread and in plant-based milks. They are a food with a lot of nutrients in a small space.

    What this milk offers

    • A lactose-free drink, with some calcium, magnesium and good fat, if you do not strain it too much.
    • A nutty taste that goes very well with cinnamon and a touch of honey.
    • An easy way to add seeds to your day, at breakfast or as a snack.

If you are allergic to sesame, this recipe is not for you.

    How to make sesame milk

    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup of sesame seeds
    • 4 cups of water
    • Cinnamon and cloves to taste
    • Honey to taste (optional)

    Instructions:

    1. Boil the water with the cinnamon and cloves.
    2. In a pan, toast the sesame seeds for a few minutes, without burning them: this takes away some of the bitterness.
    3. When the water boils, add the sesame seeds. Turn off the heat and let it cool down a bit.
    4. Blend, and strain it if you want it smoother. The more pulp you leave, the more fiber and minerals stay in.
    5. Sweeten with honey if you like. Keep it in the fridge and drink it within 2 or 3 days.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does it have lactose?
No. It is a plant-based drink: it only has sesame, water and spices.

Does it have as much calcium as cow's milk?
No. Sesame has calcium, but the homemade drink is more diluted. If you want to add calcium, also look at your plate (sardines, leafy greens) or at a calcium and magnesium supplement such as Calplex by Dr. Norman.
