  • Magnesium glycinate and other types of magnesium

    September 06, 2026 3 min read

Magnesium glycinate is one of the most searched-for forms of magnesium. Here we explain what it is, how it differs from other types of magnesium, how to read the label to know how much magnesium it has and what the labels of the ones we carry say.

    What magnesium glycinate is

In a supplement, magnesium is always bound to another substance. In glycinate it is bound to glycine, an amino acid. You will see the name written several ways: glycinate, bisglycinate or «chelated». «Chelated» means the mineral is attached to the amino acid.

This is how the Source Naturals glycinate label explains it: «Source Naturals magnesium is attached ("chelated") to the amino acid glycine. The magnesium bis-glycinate combination enables efficient absorption, the glycinate allowing the magnesium to transfer easily across the intestinal wall. Increased absorption means more usable magnesium for your body's needs.*»

The types of magnesium, in short

    • Glycinate or bisglycinate: magnesium bound to glycine, an amino acid.
    • Citrate: magnesium bound to citric acid.
    • L-threonate: magnesium bound to L-threonic acid. Magtein is the brand name of this form.
    • Chloride: magnesium bound to chlorine. It is the one in oils, sprays, lotions and bath flakes, which are used on the skin.
    • Oxide: another common form in magnesium supplements.

They are all magnesium. What changes is what it is bound to, how much magnesium each serving has and how it is used. Below is what the label of each one we carry says.

How to know how much magnesium it has

The label's table can write it in two ways, and they do not mean the same thing:

    • When it says «Magnesium… (as magnesium bis-glycinate)»: the number is the magnesium. For example, the Source Naturals glycinate says «Magnesium 200 mg (as magnesium bis-glycinate)»: 200 mg of magnesium per serving.
    • When it gives the compound's name, like «Magnesium Citrate 1200 mg»: the number is what the whole magnesium citrate weighs, not just the magnesium.

Before comparing two bottles, check which of the two it says.
