Its ingredients and what they do in the body

Cinnamon cassia (Cinnamomum cassia). According to the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), in its “Cinnamon” fact sheet, cinnamon is a spice that comes from the dried bark of various species of Cinnamomum trees. Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), known as “true” cinnamon, grows primarily in Sri Lanka; cassia cinnamon is grown in areas of southeastern Asia and is the most common type sold in North America. The MeSH medical vocabulary of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) lists Cinnamomum cassia as another name for Cinnamomum aromaticum, the name NCCIH uses, and also calls it Chinese cinnamon or Chinese cassia: a species of the genus Cinnamomum that contains cinnamates. The name Cinnamomum cassia is printed on the front of this bottle, which holds 1 fl oz (30 mL) of that oil at 100%, with no other ingredient.

Which part of the plant it comes from. NCCIH explains that the bark, leaves, flowers, fruits and roots of cinnamon have a long history of use in cuisine and traditional medicine in China, India and Persia (Iran). This oil does not come from the bark: the label says «Extraction Method: Steam Distilled from plant's leaves and twigs».

Its aroma and attributes. NOW describes its aroma as warm and spicy and gives it these qualities: «Attributes: Warming, stimulating, refreshing.» These are the brand's words about the scent, for aromatherapy.

Tested batch by batch. The label says: «NOW® Essential Oils are analytically tested for identity, purity and adulteration to assure the highest quality.»

    What sets it apart:

The label states the species and the plant part: Cinnamomum cassia, from leaves and twigs. NCCIH notes that many cinnamon products do not clearly indicate which species (Ceylon or cassia) or which parts (bark, leaves or roots) were used, and that the types and parts of cinnamon have important differences in chemical composition.

These explanations describe the plant, its oil and how it has been used according to NCCIH and the NLM; they are not results measured with this product.
