Its ingredients and what they do in the body

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). According to the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), in its “Lavender” fact sheet, lavender is an aromatic, evergreen plant native to the Mediterranean region, including France, Spain, Andorra and Italy. Its name comes from the Latin verb “lavare,” meaning “to wash.” NCCIH explains that its scent has commonly been used in bath products, perfumes and aromatherapy. The scientific name, Lavandula angustifolia, is printed on the front of this bottle, which holds 1 fl oz (30 mL) of that oil at 100%, with no other ingredient.

Which part of the plant it comes from. According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), in its summary on lavender oil (Lavandulae aetheroleum), lavender oil is the essential oil of the Lavandula angustifolia plant and is obtained by passing a current of steam through the flowering tops of the plant. This bottle's label says the same: «Extraction Method: Steam Distilled from flowering tops».

Its aroma and attributes. NOW describes its aroma as floral and gives it these qualities: «Attributes: Soothing, normalizing, balancing.» These are the brand's words about the scent, for aromatherapy.

Tested batch by batch. The label says: «NOW® Essential Oils are analytically tested for identity, purity and adulteration to assure the highest quality.»

    What sets it apart:

It is Lavandula angustifolia, as the front says, not lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia), a widely grown lavender hybrid. According to a review from the University of Opole, Poland (Pokajewicz et al., Molecules, 2023), lavandin oil is similar to Lavandula angustifolia oil but contains more terpenes, giving camphor notes that are less valued in perfumery; lavandin yields more oil and costs less to produce.

These explanations describe the plant, its oil and how it has been used according to NCCIH, the EMA and Pokajewicz et al.; they are not results measured with this product.
