Its ingredients and what they do in the body

The label lists all four in a 360 mg proprietary blend per capsule and does not say how much of each one it has.

Aloe ferox latex. Aloe ferox is a species of aloe; the bottle notes that aloe grows in warm places like the Caribbean and South Africa. According to the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), in its “Aloe Vera” page (updated February 2025), different parts come from the aloe leaf: the gel, from the inner leaf, and the latex, from the leaf's outer layer. This bottle uses the latex, inside the 360 mg blend in each capsule. According to a review by Nalimu and colleagues in the Future Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2021), anthraquinones are among the main compounds in Aloe ferox: they belong to the same family of substances the EMA describes in cascara and buckthorn.

What sets it apart:

The label says «Aloe ferox (latex)»: it is aloe latex, not aloe gel. According to the NCCIH, the gel comes from the inner part of the leaf and the latex from the outer layer, and some products use the whole leaf, which has both. That is why AloeMaxLax is not the same as an aloe juice or gel: it has the part of the leaf that goes with the laxative herbs in this blend.

Cascara sagrada bark. It is the dried bark of the Rhamnus purshiana tree; here it is in the 360 mg blend, 1 capsule a day. According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), in its summary for the public on cascara (2020), it contains anthraquinones, comparable to those in senna, that stimulate bowel movements so the bowels empty, and change how the bowels absorb water and salt: the stool holds more water, softens and passes more easily. The EMA considers it for short-term use, from age 12 and for no more than one week, the same limits this bottle gives.

Buckthorn bark (frangula). It is the dried bark of the Rhamnus frangula (Frangula alnus) shrub. According to the EMA, in its summary for the public on frangula bark (2019), its hydroxyanthracene derivatives are thought to stimulate movement of the large intestine, speeding up transit, and to increase fluid and salt inside the colon. The EMA also limits it to short-term use, from age 12 and for no more than one week.

Fennel seed. It is the dried fruit of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), the same plant used in cooking. According to the EMA, in its summary on sweet fennel fruit, fennel fruit has been in use for a long time, and digestion is among the uses that agency recognizes for it. The label does not say whether it is sweet or bitter fennel or what role it plays in the blend.

The other ingredients. The capsule is plant-derived (hypromellose); it also has cellulose and magnesium stearate.
