When a scratchy throat, a cough and a heavy chest keep the house awake, Bronkoplex is the syrup that moves fastest off our respiratory shelf. It is Dr. Norman's agave honey formula, made in Puerto Rico, and the label carries dosing from 6 months of age.

What it is and what's in the bottle

An 8 oz syrup built on agave syrup, which coats and soothes the throat, and eucalyptus leaf, traditionally used to help clear the chest. The label's blend does not stop there: it also carries elder berry, propolis, menthol crystals and mullein leaf.

The rest of the bottle: fructose, deionized water, natural caramel color, vegetable glycerin, natural flavors, citric acid, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate. It contains propolis, a bee product — worth knowing if anyone in the house is allergic to bees. The label states plainly that this product is not a medicine.

    Who it's for

    • People with a dry or chesty cough.
    • Anyone whose chest feels heavy from a cold or from allergies.
    • Throats left raw by air conditioning or dust.
    • Families who want a natural syrup in the cabinet.

    How to take it

The label directs every 2 hours, by age:

    • Children 6 months to 2 years: ½ tablespoon.
    • Children 3 to 12 years: 1 tablespoon.
    • Adults: 2 tablespoons.

One normal quirk: because it is a natural syrup it may turn cloudy or crystallize. It is not spoiled — stand the bottle in warm water and it clears on its own.

    Frequently asked questions

From what age can Bronkoplex be given?
The label carries dosing from 6 months. As with anything given to a baby, ask your pediatrician first — especially since the blend contains menthol crystals and propolis.

    Does it contain bee products?
Yes. The blend includes propolis, which bees make. Do not use it if there is a bee allergy.

Why did my syrup go cloudy?
That is normal in a natural syrup. Place the closed bottle in warm water and it returns to its usual state.

    Is it a medicine?
No, and the label says so. It is a dietary supplement. It does not replace what your doctor has prescribed.

    Precautions

Keep out of reach of children. Do not use it if there is an allergy to bees or bee products. Ask your doctor or pediatrician before giving it to a baby, if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you take medication. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
