What Nutrition Now PB8 Probiotic is

Nutrition Now PB8 Probiotic is an 8-strain probiotic in vegetarian capsules: each 2-capsule serving has 14 billion CFU (colony forming units) at time of manufacture, in a 755 mg probiotic blend. The bottle holds 120 capsules; the label directs 2 capsules per day for adults, so it lasts 60 days (120 ÷ 2, our own math). It costs $29.22, about $0.49 per 2-capsule serving. Its ingredients and what they do in the body

What probiotics are. The NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) defines them as live microorganisms intended to have health benefits when consumed. It explains that many are the same as or similar to microorganisms that naturally live in our bodies. That community of microorganisms living in us is called the microbiome.

Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. According to NCCIH, these are the two most common groups of bacteria in probiotics. PB8 has five from the lactobacilli group (Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Lp-115, Ligilactobacillus salivarius Ls-33, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus Lr-32 and Lacticaseibacillus casei Lc-11) and three bifidobacteria (Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04, Bifidobacterium bifidum Bb-06 and Bifidobacterium longum Bl-05).

Why the long names. In 2020 scientists split the old Lactobacillus genus into several new groups (Zheng et al., International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology). That is why the label says Lactiplantibacillus, Ligilactobacillus and Lacticaseibacillus where it used to say Lactobacillus plantarum, salivarius, rhamnosus and casei: they are the same species with updated names.

Each strain, with its code. NCCIH points out that different types of probiotics may have different effects: what is seen with one strain cannot be assumed for another. That is why the label names each one with its code (La-14, Bl-04, Lp-115…).

14 billion CFU. CFU is the way to count live bacteria able to multiply. The label says: «14 billion good bacteria per serving at time of manufacture. Bacteria count will vary after time of manufacture.» That is why it asks you to store it in a cool, dry place, best refrigerated after opening.

The other ingredients. Microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide are inside the 755 mg blend; they are not probiotics. The capsule is made of cellulose and water, which is why it is vegetarian.

These explanations describe normal body functions; they are not results measured with this product.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is PB8 Probiotic for?

It is a probiotic supplement for adults: each 2-capsule serving provides 14 billion CFU of 8 strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, bacteria similar to those that naturally live in the body, according to NIH's NCCIH.

How many bacteria does PB8 have?

14 billion CFU per 2-capsule serving at time of manufacture, in a 755 mg probiotic blend with 8 strains. The label notes that the count will vary after time of manufacture.

    How do I take it?

Adults: 2 capsules per day, per the label's suggested use. The 120-capsule bottle lasts 60 days (our own math).

Does it need to be refrigerated?

Not before opening: the label says to store it in a cool, dry place, and that it is best refrigerated after opening.

    Is it vegetarian and allergen-free?

Yes. The capsule is vegetarian (cellulose and water) and the label says it contains no gluten, eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, or soy.

Why does the label say Ligilactobacillus instead of Lactobacillus?

Because in 2020 the scientific names of several Lactobacillus species changed. Ligilactobacillus salivarius, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and casei are the same species with updated names.
