What NOW Tea Tree Oil is

NOW Essential Oils Tea Tree is 100% pure tea tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), steam distilled from leaves and twigs, in a 1 fl oz (30 mL) bottle. It is a single-ingredient oil for aromatherapy; for all other uses, the label says to carefully dilute it with a carrier oil. It costs $15.70. Its ingredients and what they do in the body

The tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). According to the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), in its “Tea Tree Oil” fact sheet, tea tree oil comes from steam distillation of the leaves of the tea tree, a plant native to New South Wales and Queensland in Australia. Most tea tree oil is produced in Australia, but China and several countries in Africa also produce it for commercial sale. The scientific name, Melaleuca alternifolia, is printed on the front of this bottle, which holds 1 fl oz (30 mL) of that oil at 100%, with no other ingredient.

How it was used in Australia. NCCIH explains that the Aboriginal people of Australia traditionally used tea tree leaves on the skin. A scientific review from the University of Western Australia (Carson, Hammer and Riley, Clinical Microbiology Reviews, 2006) notes that the oil has been used in Australia for almost 100 years and is now sold worldwide, both as pure oil and inside many other products.

How this oil is made. The label says it is steam distilled from leaves and twigs, the same method NCCIH describes. Its aroma, per NOW, is potent, warm and spicy, and the brand gives it these qualities: «Attributes: Cleansing, purifying, renewing.»

Tested batch by batch. The label says: «NOW® Essential Oils are analytically tested for identity, purity and adulteration to assure the highest quality.»

    What sets it apart:

It is 100% pure, undiluted oil, as the front says, not a product that merely contains it. Carson et al. (2006) explain that tea tree is sold both ways: pure and as a component of other products. That is why the label says to dilute it in a carrier oil before any use other than aromatherapy.

These explanations describe the plant, its oil and how it has been used according to NCCIH and Carson et al.; they are not results measured with this product.
