Its ingredients and what they do in the body

Chromium (200 mcg per tablet). It is a mineral the body needs in very small amounts; the bottle calls it «a trace element» and says it «may work closely with insulin to help facilitate the uptake of glucose into cells»*. That is the normal function the bottle links to chromium. The FDA's federal regulation (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.9) sets the Daily Value for chromium at 35 mcg for adults; the 200 mcg in one tablet is about 5.7 times that amount (our own math).

What sets it apart: it carries two forms of chromium in the same tablet, 100 mcg of chromium polynicotinate (chromium bound to niacin, under the ChromeMate® brand) and 100 mcg of chromium picolinate, per the bottle's table; and the amount, 200 mcg against the 35 mcg Daily Value in the federal regulation (21 CFR 101.9).

Calcium (27 mg per tablet, as dibasic calcium phosphate). The bottle's table lists it as «Calcium (as dibasic calcium phosphate)», 27 mg, 2% of the Daily Value. It comes from dibasic calcium phosphate, which the bottle also names among the other ingredients. The FDA's regulation (eCFR, 21 CFR 182.1217) recognizes calcium phosphate (mono-, di- and tribasic) as generally safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing practice.

Stearic acid and magnesium stearate. They are among the tablet's other ingredients. The FDA's regulation affirms them as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for food, with no limitation other than good manufacturing practice (eCFR, 21 CFR 184.1090 and 184.1440).
