What is the “500 mg”? The panel lists 27 mg of magnesium per tablet. Magnesium gluconate is a salt: the magnesium is bound to two molecules of gluconic acid. In its dihydrate form, magnesium is 5.4% of its weight (PubChem (U.S. National Library of Medicine), magnesium gluconate dihydrate, 450.63 g/mol), and 500 mg × 5.4% = 27 mg (our own math), exactly what the panel says. So 500 mg is the compound and 27 mg is the magnesium it provides.

Its ingredients and what they do in the body

Magnesium, 27 mg per tablet (as magnesium gluconate). Magnesium is an essential mineral: the body does not make it and gets it from food. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, Oregon State University, “Magnesium” (2025), it is a cofactor for hundreds of enzymes; it is required by the enzyme that makes ATP, the energy molecule of cells; it takes part in several steps of making DNA, RNA and proteins; it plays a structural role in bone, cell membranes and chromosomes, and about 50% to 60% of the body's magnesium is in the skeleton. It also allows ions to move across cell membranes, which nerves and muscles use to work.

How much 27 mg is. The same source gives a recommended daily amount of 400 to 420 mg for adult men and 310 to 320 mg for adult women, counting food. This tablet provides 6% of the label's Daily Value, a small amount that adds to what you already eat.

The gluconate. It is the form of magnesium in this tablet: magnesium bound to gluconic acid. The Linus Pauling Institute lists it among the forms of magnesium used in supplements, along with oxide, chloride and citrate.

The other ingredients. Microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, stearic acid, silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and vegetable magnesium stearate: they make up the tablet, they are not the mineral in the serving.
