  • Hawthorn berry: what it is and the forms it comes in

    September 07, 2026 2 min read

Hawthorn berry, in Spanish, is espino blanco: the berry of Crataegus. Many people search for it by its English name and cannot find a page that explains it clearly. Here we tell you what it is, what else it is called, the forms it is sold in and what the label of the one we carry says.

    What it is

Hawthorn is a shrub from the rose family. Its berries are bright red and look like tiny apples. Some products contain only the berry; others also contain the leaf and the flower.

    Its other names

    • Hawthorn or hawthorn berry: its English name.
    • Espino blanco, espino albar or majuelo: in Spanish.
    • Crataegus: the scientific name, the one you will see on the label.

They are the same plant. What changes is the form it is sold in and which part of the plant it contains.

The forms it is sold in

    • Tea: the dried berries, in tea bags, with no caffeine.
    • Liquid extract (drops): more concentrated. Some come alcohol-free.
    • Capsules: the powdered berry, in a fixed measure.
    • Blends: some formulas combine it with other herbs or vitamins. If you want only hawthorn, it should be the only ingredient.
